The art of weaving existed in Persia for over 2500 years. Garden rugs were
woven for Persian kings to enhance their palaces into gardens no matter the
season. The words beauty, elegance, durability and heirloom are used to describe Persian
and Oriental Rugs.
How rugs are
made
Every day hand made rugs are mostly made with 100% natural
lambs wool pile except a few that are made from silk'The first step in making a rug is
to set up a loom. Vertical looms which are more permanent are mostly used in
towns and villages and horizontal looms are used by nomads and tribal weavers. The next step is to wind parallel
vertical threads called weft onto the loom frame which later appears as the
fringes at either end of the rug. Then the weaver starts tying the knots with her fingers
around the weft with wool yarns following a pattern that represents the design
and the colors, or in the case of a nomadic weavers, create their own design as
they go along. There are two types of knots, the Persian Knot and the Turkish Knot. After the entire rug is woven and removed from the frame,
it goes under a shear to unify the pile surface and bring out the design.
Care and Cleaning
Instructions
For day to day cleaning, vacuuming will remove surface
soil. Be sure not to vacuum the fringes. Use your vacuum attachments to reach
areas under the furniture to avoid moth damage. For major and deep cleaning,
please contact us or any specialized oriental rug cleaner.
Hints for Stain Removal
When spills occur, dilute with plenty of water. Next, blot
the area from the edge towards the center. Avoid rubbing the area. For solid
spills, take a spoon and carefully scoop-up the material. It is best to attack
the spill immediately. For further advice, contact us. We will be glad to help.
Furniture arrangement
***Protect your rug from furniture legs with some sort of
coasters to avoid fibers from being crushed.***
Rotation
To insure even wear, your rug should be rotated once a
year. Depending on the traffic, the rotation may vary from six months to two
years.
Padding
A quality pad under your rug will help protect it from
dirt, wear and slippage. We will be happy to provide you with the correct
padding.
Restoration
In case of damage, just about any problem has a solution
with professional restoration. Old and antique rugs sometimes need to be
restored to life by reweaving in one or more small areas. Newer rugs are rarely in need of repair. An
experienced professional must always be consulted in these matters.
Storing
If you have to store your rug for a long time, pack your
rug with moth repellants and wrap in strong paper.
